Katmandu

Katmandu

The name Kathmandu was believed to be derived from two Sanskrit words ‘Kastha’ (Wood) and ‘Mandap’ (Covered shelter) which means wooden cover shelter which was a temple stood in Durbar Square. Situated at an altitude of 4,600 ft Kathmandu is the oldest and 2nd largest city in terms of area and largest city in terms of population of Nepal. It is also the capital city of Nepal. Kathmandu with its medieval set up had won the heart of many travellers. After the major earthquake of 2015 tourists can only see the remains of once iconic structure like Durbar Square. Even after the massive destruction there are many destinations around Kathmandu which has survived with minimal damage like Swayambunath. Swayambunath residing atop a hill at a distance of 2 km on the west side of the Kathmandu valley is the oldest iconic religious structure of Kathmandu. Built in 5th century Swayambunath of Nepal is a Buddhist complex which is also known as Monkey Temple. Boudhanath is another favored destination of Kathmandu which has lured travellers from around the globe. Located 10 km from the Kathmandu city, Boudhanath is the largest stupa of Nepal which was built in 15 century AD. It is considered as a sacred site for Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhist. Tourist can also visit Narayanhity Royal Palace which once served as the residence of the Nepal’s Royal family. The palace was built in 1961 under the commandment of King Mahendra and later in 2006 converted in a museum when the monarchy was overruled by constitution. Nepal being known as the land of prayers and monasteries is the birth place of a revered sage Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Nestled on the foothill of Himalaya near Indo-Nepal border is Lumbini, the birth place of Gautama Buddha. Lumbini was neglected for many centuries until in 1895 a German archeologist discovered the pillars and craving made in 249BC under the commandant of Emperor Ashoka. Lumbini with it significant history has become the Mecca for Buddhist pilgrim. It is one of the four places which was claimed to be the future pilgrimage centre by the revered sage Gautama Buddha. International Mountain Museum
