Khechiopalri Tsho, also known as Khecheopalri Lake, is located in the West District of Sikkim, approximately 31 km away from Pelling. The lake, regarded as sacred, sits at an altitude of 5,600 ft. It is undoubtedly the most expansive lake in the Sikkim area. It is encompassed by thick alpine woodland and is believed to have been sanctified by Guru Padmasambhava, a highly esteemed sage. Khechiopalri Lake is often described as a wish-fulfilling lake, and its name, “Khechiopalri” or “Kha-chot-palri,” means the “Heaven of Guru Padmasambhava.”

As you traverse the wooden jetty, the line of prayer wheels guides you to the edge of Khecheopalri Lake, where a cluster of Tibetan prayer flags sway in the breeze. It envelops you in a sense of enchantment. This site is regarded as a sacred pilgrimage destination for both Buddhists and Hindus, adding to its mystique. The lake is encircled by a cluster of temperate trees and bamboo, creating an idyllic recreational location for travelers exploring the Buddhist religious circuit.

Places to visit in Khecheopalri Lake

Legend has it that Khecheopalri Lake resembles the foot of Guru Padmasambhava, which can be observed from the nearby hills. The lake’s peaceful atmosphere is occasionally interrupted by the distant songs of rare birds, which, according to another legend, collect fallen leaves from its surface.

According to Hinduism, Lord Shiva meditated in Dupukney Cave, which sits atop the lake. Additionally, some believe that the lake formed when Lord Shiva stepped on the ground. Another well-known tale tells of a Lepcha girl to whom the lake’s goddess appeared and presented a precious stone that the girl ultimately misplaced. It is believed by locals that this gem now rests at the lake’s bottom. This history contributes to Khecheopalri Lake’s reputation as a “wish-fulfillment lake.”
